Treating Tanning Problem
Sunburn
Tanning for an extensive period of time may lead to sunburn. To treat this problem it is necessary to utilize the past experiences of several people who undergo tanning. The optimum amount of time required to achieve the required amount of tan but avoid the possibility of sunburn should be calculated. Then while tanning an amount just less than this time should be recommended. For different weather conditions and different seasons this timing will be altered. Also depending upon the frequency of tanning and skin type, the advocated time that leads to sunburn will vary. Most sun lamps give out UVA radiation, which are less likely to produce sunburn.
Skin Cancer
It is a well-recognized fact that UV radiation may prove harmful. Also new studies prove that there is a relationship between UVA radiation and malignant melanoma, which is the most serious type
of skin cancer. A very small quantity of sunlight is needed to manufacture vitamin D. The amount of sunlight required to create this vitamin is very less than that required to create a suntan. It has been found that as the exposure to UV radiation from the sun is increasing the number of skin cancer cases has been on the rise. Also sunburns and skin cancer are interrelated. Sometimes even moderate amount of tanning may lead to skin cancer. As the effect is not quickly visible, the affected people are not aware of the danger of tanning. It is very difficult to gauge the required amount of time, which may prove to be an optimum one to avoid the risk of skin cancer.
Other problems
The ozone layer has been depleting gradually and the harmful ultraviolet rays would be penetrating more into the earth’s atmosphere. So, something has to be done on a global scale to prevent this sort of atmosphere. If UV protected sunglasses are not used, there may be an adverse effect on the eyes. So, the individual undergoing tanning must strictly adhere to use of these sunglasses. The immune system may also get damaged due to prolonged exposure. This must be kept in mind while deciding the time and frequency of tan. Insufficient UVB exposures cause Vitamin D deficiency, which thereby causes cancer, osteomalacia and premature death. So, care must be taken to have adequate UVB exposure.
