It is wrongly thought that a tan is healthy and protects from sunburn. In reality, a tan is formed as the body defends itself against damage from UV radiation. Another incorrect notion is that if the skin has a cool sensation it does not sunburn quickly. In fact, a cool breeze or swimming causes the skin to feel more comfortable, but it is getting the same quantity of UV radiation. Another myth is that taking breaks while sunbathing reduces the possibility of sunburn. In reality, sun burning causes a cumulative effect. Another wrong idea is that sunburn obtained on a cloudy day is similar to a sunny day. On an overcast rainy day, the quantity of UV radiation reaching the surface is very less. When people wear sun blocks they think they can stay in the sun for a longer time. However, the skin can burn also with a sun block on.

Seven Myths

The first myth is that sun exposure causes skin cancer. But it is proved that human beings need ultraviolet light to survive. Scientists have arrived at a conclusion that sunburns and not merely sun exposure is the root of skin cancer. The second myth is that planning a safe tan is not possible. In reality, it is not safe to avoid the sun. The advantages of sun exposure are more than the risks of overexposure. The third myth is that some dermatologists state that tanning causes melanoma. But the truth is exactly the opposite. The fourth myth is that there is an epidemic of skin cancer in the present world and this happens because more people are tanning. The real condition is not the same. Skin cancer rates are growing gradually from the early 1900s. Moderate tanning has not been linked scientifically as the origin of skin cancer. The fifth myth is that people may catch AIDS or herpes from tanning beds. However, this is not possible. The HIV virus dies when exposed to oxygen and cannot thrive on a tanning bed. The sixth myth is that indoor tanning has more risk than outdoor tanning. But indoors, individuals are subjected to a controlled quantum of UV light with a minimal possibility of sunburn. The seventh myth is that indoor tanning is like cigarette smoking. But smoking subjects the lungs to unnatural products while tanning is the body’s natural reaction to sunlight.
