Sunless Tanning Products

The human skin is made up of 2 major layers. The epidermis is the outer layer and the dermis is the inner layer. In both sun tanning and self-tanning, the action take place in the epidermis. The epidermis is also made up of 2 layers. The deepest layer is called as the basal layer and is affected during sun tanning. Sunless tanning products affect the horny layer, which is the outermost layer of the epidermis.

Examples

The first sunless tanning product was developed in 1960 by Coppertone and was called Quick Tanning lotion or QT. This lotion produced an unbelievably orange shade. Further much advancement was made on the sunless tanning issue. Tanning pills, sunless tanners and bronzers were developed. It is possible to smooth, swipe or spray on a light bronze glow or a deep and dark tan. Most of these products required 45 to 60 minutes to exhibit an effect. As per the American Academy of Dermatology, the best products available are sunless tanning lotions containing dihydroxyacetone or DHA as the active ingredient. This is a colorless sugar that cooperates with the dead cells located in the horny layer of the epidermis. When the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, the effect is that a color change occurs. This change remains for 5 to 7 days. Every day millions of dead skin cells are worn away. Every 35 to 45 days there is a new epidermis. So tans from sunless tanning products fade gradually. So to maintain the tan, application after every 3 days is essential. Gels, lotions or sprays that contain DHA are very reliable and useful, it is claimed that Tanning accelerators that contain the amino acid tyrosine increase melanin formation and speed up the tanning process. They are available as lotions and pills.

Canthaxanthin

Another product is a tanning pill that contains canthaxanthin. It is used as a color additive in certain foods. But it is not advocated by the FDA as a tanning agent. After canthaxanthin is consumed, it is deposited all over the body and a orange-brown color is obtained. Another product is called the bronzer. It is available in the form of powders and moisturizers. They create a tan that can be easily removed with soap and water. These products tint or stain the skin till they are washed away.
