Scary color contacts and other cosmetic and theatrical contact lenses have become all the rage. They are ways for people to change their look, draw attention to themselves, or just plain have fun. Scary color contacts and other fashionable lenses, though, can also be dangerous. Believe it or not, the FDA has reported that improperly used cosmetic eye lenses can actually cause damage to your eyes, even blindness. Never fear, though. Read on here to find out how to see your way past these risks.

First, understand that you probably need a prescription for scary color contacts and other cosmetic eye wear. This is especially the case if you normally wear glasses or normal contacts to improve your vision. Even if you are using non-corrective, or plano, lenses, you may need to see a doctor before using them, depending on your state law. The FDA for its part considers such plano, or cosmetic lenses, to not be medical devices.

Still, the FDA knows that even plano scary color contacts and other theatrical lenses are serious business. The government agency report recently that such lenses could cause eye injury or even blindness if you don’t wear them with a prescription and, more importantly, have them properly fitted. The FDA has even gone so far as to prevent some plano colored lenses from being imported into the U.S. because they did not meet safety regulations.

The important lesson for you, the consumer, is to only buy your scary color contacts or other eye wear from reputable stores and online vendors. A flea market, for instance, is not the way to go, since you don’t know how safe these are. You will, after all, be sticking these lenses in your eyes.

Once you have your scary color contacts or other cosmetic lenses, you will want to talk with your eye doctor. He or she can make sure you have the correct prescription if you need one, and in any case, your doctor can make sure you have the lenses properly fitted to your eyes. Just like every other body part, eyes come in different shapes and sizes. And if your lenses aren’t properly fitted, you could be in for a lot of discomfort, if not danger, from your lenses. Isn’t your vision worth these precautions?
