A common idea that is inherent in the themes of the occident and the orient suggests that beauty exists in the physical appearance of things and within people who are inherently good. A perfect example is that of a good apple that will naturally be perceived as more beautiful than a bruised one. Also, most people judge people who are physically attractive human beings to be good, both physically and on a deeper level. They are specifically believed to possess a variety of positive traits, even if not on display, and positive personality characteristics.

The element of symmetry is important to natural beauty, but style and fashion vary widely and today we understand this natural symmetry as one within the vagarities of nature. Cross-cultural research has found a variety of commonalities in different people’s perception and idea of beauty. Usually large eyes and a clear complexion, are considered aspects of natural beauty, beautiful in both men and women in all cultures. Some researchers have suggested that the neonatal features are inherently attractive and naturally beautiful. Youth is also associated with natural beauty.

There is good evidence that the standards of attractiveness are similar across different cultures. Averageness and symmetry are the basis for determining beauty. Facial attractiveness is an appeal most sought for mate choice because symmetry is looked upon as a sign of good health. It is also possible that these specifif preferences are simply by-products of the manner in which the human brain processes information.
