The Fresnel lenses are the lenses that are divisible into small sections. All these sections focus the light at a singular point as the conventional lens. However, in this case the thickness of the lenses is not as much as the conventional lens. Therefore, we can save on the material of the lens and thus reduce the cost of the lens.

The purpose of making these lenses was for the use in the lighthouse in France. Augustine Jean Fresnel was he person who first suggested the use of these lenses. However, the use of these lenses the light from the lighthouse could go to a further distance as much as 20 miles.

The construction of the lens

In the beginning, the sections of these lenses would appear as different prisms that have an arrangement that gave the lens the appearance of a single lens. However, these days with the invention of the computer controlled milling instrument the cutting is so fine that we cannot make out the sections of the lens and therefore the complete lens appears as a single lens.

All the sections of the lens have the same curvature and therefore they focus the light at the same place. This type of arrangement has made it possible to reduce the requirement of the glass for manufacturing the lens. Therefore, they are thinner and lesser in weight than the conventional lenses. Nevertheless, you should remember that this causes some reduction of the quality of the images that they provide.

Uses of the large Fresnel lenses

Because of its characteristics, they prove to be useful in places where there is no need of maintaining the quality of the images but it is important to reduce the weight of the lens. These days the Fresnel lenses made from the transparent plastics are in widely use for the projectors, television projectors magnifying glasses etc. moreover they are also useful for solar cookers and similar solar collectors. This is because they are more efficient gatherers of the sunlight than the convex lenses.

Then they are also popular for use in the traffic signals and the tail or similar indicator lights of the vehicles.

These are only some of the advantages of the Fresnel lights. In addition to this, there are numerous more advantages of the Fresnel lenses.
