The central part of the lens, which is mentioned earlier, has concave surface on the inner side. The radius of curvature of this lens is R1. This radius is meant especially for contact with the corneal region of the eyes. The outer lip of this lens is an integrated or inseparable part of this central lens always projects out in radial orientation with respect to the central lens. The structure of the outer lip is a concave surface which normally extents upto the central part of the lens respectively. The radius of this outer lip is known as R2 and it is always greater than the radius of the central potion that is R2 is always greater than R1 whatever the dimensions may be. The reason for this arrangement is that outer lip is meant to contact scleral portion of the eyes. The outer lip is shaped for the purpose of deflection relative to the portion of central lens. One disadvantage of the Vitrectomy lenses is that they can br damaged while cleaning but this disadvantage is overcome by the disposable nature and cheap price of this lens.

The main use of this lens is to allow doctors to view mainly the posterior portion of the eyes while operating.
