Indoor tanning is an alternative to conventional tanning as the later is associated with various skin problems such as skin aging and skin cancer. Indoor tanning consists of lying down in a tanning bed, and lights from above and below a body give a tan. Many beds, particularly the older ones use UVB lights for giving the desired effect. UVB rays are short wave ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause burning. A number of salon owners are realizing the harmful effects of UVB radiation, and are switching to UVA light source.

UVA rays are long wave ultraviolet rays. They are less likely to cause burning than what UVB rays cause. But UVA rays have been linked to malignant melanoma, and immune system damage. Moreover, these rays penetrate more deeply and can weaken skin's inner connective tissue. It is observed that too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can damage the retina of eyes, and overexposure can burn the cornea. Moreover, repeated exposure of ultraviolet rays can alter the structure of eye lens, forming a cataract, which if left untreated can lead to blindness. It is very important to wear protective eye goggles. According to some people, wearing ordinary goggles, using cotton balls, or simply closing eyes can offer protection from harmful effects of radiation. But this is not true. These things do not protect a person from the intensity of UV rays. Therefore, it is recommended not to use tanning beds. It is a good idea to spend some time in natural light with sunscreens having SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15.

It is very crucial for people to use certain guidelines before going for indoor tanning. Before using airbrush application, it is better not to use any lotions or perfumes. Shaking a can thoroughly before each application is also important. Even and thorough application of a tan is a must. A person should allow a deep and penetrating tan. Moreover, he should not take bath 6 to 8 hours after a tan. If it is his first attempt, doing it again on a second day is important for the tan to be effective. He should always wipe the bottoms of his feet after airbrushing. Also, maintaining cool body temperature before a tan is a must.
