Function Of Lens..
Lens is the translucent and convex structure of eye that helps cornea to refract light which is then focused on retina. In Latin lens is known as aquula or crystal lens. For human eye refractive power of lens in its natural environment is about 15 diopters, where diopter is unit of measuring optical power of lens. And it is roughly one forth of eyes total optical power.
How lens works?
The important function of the lens is “to change the focal distance of the eye to allocate focusing on objects at various distances”. This adjustment of lens according to focal distance is known as “accommodation”. Accommodation of eyes is the process in which eye increases optical power to preserve an apparent image on the object which falls near eye vision. Human eye can change focus from distance 7cm in 350 milliseconds. And dramatic change in focal power of human eye is of 15 diopter. It is parallel to the functioning of photographic camera as it moves lenses according to the focal length and its distance from required object. In photography lens is most often focused by adjusting the distance from lens assembly to the image forming surface, or by moving elements within the lens assembly.
You can think of the eye as a camera, camera needs lens and a film to produce image. The same thing happens here eyeball requires lens to refract or focus the light and films on which the rays are to be focused. If anyone of these components fails to work correctly, the result is poor picture or vision. Retina works as film of camera. It captures the image and sends it to be processed by brain.
Inside the eyeball there are two fluids-filled sections in between them lens is present. It is also surrounded by gel like material called as aqueous humor. It has two chambers anterior chamber and posterior chamber. Here lens is transparent, convex structure and about 10 mm in diameter. It changes its shape because it is connected to ciliary body. Lens is used for fine tuning of vision. Since eye is the only organ which can maximize its field of vision to any directions, and can be protected by orbital cavity.
