The fragrant products are abundantly present in the nature. The man also started the using them for his personal use. In the historical days mainly the fragrant products had their source from the plants and very few of them like the musk were from the animals also. They were at that time rare and therefore only richer people could use them. The methods at that time were also good and efficient though not as that of today.

The use of the simple fragrant products of the plants as the flowers was in use from the earlier days itself. In addition to the use of the flowers the in those days the people used to burn the wood incense or the gums and resins of the plants.

Later, as the time progressed, the different products that came into use for provision of fragrance. Some of them were the incense sticks or candles etc. their main use was in the places of worship as the churches, temples etc. in addition to this many types of products as the body oils and creams or applications for the skin became popular.

The use of the perfumes has been since or 4000 years. The first records of the use and extraction of the perfume are in the Mesopotamian and the Egyptian civilizations. However, their methods were not that efficient and therefore the use of perfume was not that popular in them. However, later the Romans and the Arabians developed better techniques for the extraction of the perfumes and therefore it became popular in these civilizations.

On the other hand, in the East Asia, the perfumery was in use but they used the incense only.

The modern perfume first came into use in the 14th century. This was in Europe. It contained essential oil from plants and it was in combination with alcohol. This was popular as the ‘Hungary water’. Later during the renaissance period, its popularity increased. This first occurred in Italy and then it spread to France. This was in the 16th century. In the next decades, the perfume industry grew in size. However, they remained confined to the rich class only. During this time and the time that followed the France was the main centre of the perfume industry Europe and today it still is.
