The Electric Toothbrush makes use of electric power to oscillate the brush head. The electronic parts are absolutely sealed to avoid damage by water. Some of them require replaceable batteries, which may be rechargeable or disposable. This toothbrush is useful for those people who are not efficient at cleaning the teeth. Also, those who have arthritis or dexterity problems find the electric toothbrush useful as the movement is done automatically. It is proved that these toothbrushes are slightly better than manual ones. They cause slightly less gum diseases and can dislodge slightly more dental plaque.

Classification of Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are classified on basis of toothbrush types, Head types and Bristle types. On basis of the toothbrush type, they are divided into Sonic, Oscillating, Pulsating or Rotary type. On basis of the head type, they are divided into Sub-compact, Standard, Round and Rectangular/Tapered type. On basis of bristle type they can be grouped as Soft, Extra Soft, Sensitive and Extra Sensitive type. In the Rotary type, the bristles are arranged in a circle, which rotates generating 3000-7000 brush strokes per minute. In the Oscillator/Pulsator, the brush combines the rotary action with a to and fro pulsating motion at about 7000 brush strokes per minute. This speed is enhanced to 40,000 brush strokes per minute.

The latest of electric toothbrush

The latest generation of electric toothbrush is called the Sonic Toothbrush. It has more than 30,000 brush strokes per minute which when compared to brushing by hand, which involves 300 strokes per minute. This causes a secondary cleaning action and remove plaque where bristles would not reach manually. This happens due to the mix of two motions. Pulsation, which is the in and move movement, and Oscillation, which is the side-to-side movement, are combined. Also the motion conveys energy to the oral fluids surrounding the teeth. Some recent versions have a timer with an automatic shut-off feature. They are manufactured using a slim design, angled neck, tapered brush head, contour fit bristles and ultra high bristle speed. They move in a gentle manner on gums and less abrasively on sensitive teeth. A Quadpacer, which is an audible 30-second interval timer, is installed, which results in uniform brushing for all teeth.
