Contact Lens Solutions

The contact lenses that we use for the correction of the problems of the eyes are very soft and delicate. Therefore they themselves need some care that they are not damaged while our handing. Moreover as we put them in our eyes they it is very important that we maintain a proper hygiene of them. Some of the creations in the eyes accumulate on them. The bacteria may grow in these when we store the lenses after use. Then when we would put them, in the eyes, these may enter our eyes and there they may cause infection.

The microorganisms that infect the lenses are the bacteria, fungi and ‘Acanthamoaba’, etc. the ‘Acanthamoaba’ forms a thin film on the surface of the lens. This film is a bio-film.

Moreover, than this, also, the secretions of the eyes and these bacteria also damage the lenses and thus they reduce their life. For the cleaning of the lenses, special solutions are available. These are the contact lens solutions.

The types of solutions available

a) Multipurpose solution- these solution is the most common among the lens users in the world. By using this, we can do all the necessary things for the cleaning of the lens. These things include the rinsing disinfecting cleaning and for storing the lenses. This is also capable of removing the protein deposits on the lenses. For the other solutions, however it is necessary that we use the tablets containing protein removal enzyme.

However, the main disadvantage of these solutions is that they do not offer protection from ‘Acanthamoaba’.

b) Saline solution- these solutions are for rinsing the lenses when we wash them with a disinfectant. They also prepare the lens and make them fit for insertion into the eyes. Therefore, because of this they do not irritate the eyes after we insert them in the eyes.

c) Daily cleaner solutions- these are for the daily cleaning of the lenses before and after use.

d) Hydrogen peroxide solution-they may be either two way or one-way systems. This solution is a very strong disinfectant for the lenses. However when we use this solution for the washing of the lenses we should always remove it off with the other washing solutions from the above ones. However, remember that you should not use the saline solution for this purpose as it may react with the hydrogen peroxide.

If you do not wash it again and as it is you put the lens in the eyes then it would cause great irritation in the eyes.

Also, remember that the different types of lenses require different types of solution for washing. Therefore, rightly choose among all the options, which are available.
