With the advent of contact lenses in the second half of the twentieth century, there are been wondrous advancements in the quality, feel, and look of lenses. First came soft contact lenses with their comfort, their low cost, and their reliability. Then came disposable lenses and toric lenses, which help more and more people enjoy the benefits of corrective eye lenses. Perhaps the latest, and wildest, advancement in contact lenses are colored contacts. Colored contacts allow people to enhance or completely change the color of their eyes, whether they want to give themselves a permanent look change or if they just want to match their outfit for the evening.

You have four types of colored contacts to choose from, including visibility tints, enhancement tints, opaque-color tints, and light-filtering tints. Many, if not all, of these varieties come in styles that can be used by people who normally do not need corrective eye wear. These style lenses are called plano form lenses. On the other hand, colored lenses are also available for people who need correction for astigmatism and for bifocals, as well as people who like or require disposable kinds or other contacts that can be frequently replaced.

Visibility tint colored contacts are more for ease of use than for style. These lenses come with a light blue or green tint that is added to the lenses so you can see them when you are inserting and removing them. Plus, when you drop them – and everybody drops their lenses once in a while! – you will be able to find them much easier. The light blue or green tint, though, isn’t visible when the lenses are in your eyes.

Enhancement tint colored contacts, on the other hand, have a translucent but darker tint. The color is not meant to change the shade of your eyes, but to enhance your existing color – hence, their name. Doctors usually recommend these contacts for people who feel they have eyes with too light of a color and who feel they want their eyes to be more attractive and, what else, eye catching.

The last two types of colored contacts can drastically alter your eye color or even your vision. Opaque color lenses can completely change your eye shade from brown to blue, blue to purple. They can be used as a fashion statement or just for a change of mood. Light-filtering contacts are used for performance. They can amazingly enhance certain colors in your field of view so that a tennis ball or a golf ball, for instance, stands out and is easier to strike. These performance lenses are truly the next step in corrective eye wear.
