Collagen Injection
Summary: The procedure of collagen injections is less difficult and provides less discomfort for an effective result.
As we age, no matter how much we dreaded the wrinkles, laugh lines, and other signs of aging to come, they never fail to disappoint us. The process may have slowed down because of the preventions we took like; regularly taking collagen supplements to replenish the reducing supply collagen in our body, exercise, and proper diet. But, let’s face it! Time will really come when these hated lines stubbornly become visible on our faces after the years and years of care.
Wrinkles become visible because they are lower or deeper than the surrounding skin. When wrinkles are brought to the same level as the surrounding skin, their visibility will lessen. This can be done by either lowering the surrounding skin, or raising each wrinkle. Lowering the surrounding skin is possible through chemical peel, dermabarasion, or laser resurfacing, while raising the wrinkles is through injecting fillers.
In collagen injection, the procedure is not really that difficult. Using a fine needle, your doctor can inject fillers into your skin under each wrinkle. The fillers push the depressed wrinkles outward making them less visible. This procedure involves temporary discomfort related to the needle. Once the procedure is complete, there will be no more discomfort. You may resume to your usual activities afterwards.
The collagen fillers options can be bovine collagen, autologen injection, isolagen injection, and dermalogen. The bovine collagen injections last only for 6 to 12 weeks. Bovine collagen is extracted from cow skin, purified, sterilized, and then processed into liquid form. Because of the temporary result, there are possible allergic reactions and potential connective tissue disorders, made doctors turn to other alternatives.
Autologen injection is a collagen coming from your own skin, taken from your previous operation and then processed into liquid form. When you have an operation wherein skin is removed like, facelift, breast lift, tummy tuck, and the like; your skin maybe sent to a laboratory that extracts collagen, sterilizes it, and prepares it for re-injection. The amount of collagen to be given away depends on the amount of skin removed. Your processed liquid collagen can be stored for 5 years if you don’t need it at the same time. The results of autologen injection may last longer than bovine collagen injection, but the duration is variable.
Isolagen is a collagen from your own skin, cloned in a laboratory and processed into liquid form. A piece of skin is removed from you by your plastic surgeon and it will be sent to the Isolagen lab. In just a few weeks, the lab will send your isolagen to your doctor. A minimum of three sessions are recommended at two weeks intervals. Because live cells are injected, your improvement may continue for quite a few months after your last injection.
Dermalogen is a collagen taken from a deceased human skin which has been sterilized, purified, and then processed. Dermalogen collagen injection may last longer than bovine collagen and has fewer problems of allergic reactions and connective tissues disorders. Two or three injections are needed to achieve the maximum result at one or two month’s intervals.
Because these are all collagen injections, it would only mean that they will be metabolized by our body. They won’t give permanent results. Except bovine collagen injection, the rest have longer effects but the durations have not yet been established.
