Today, there are so many self-tanners in market that it becomes quite tricky for an average person to choose the right one. In most self tanners, there is an ingredient called DHA, a sugar which reacts with amino acids in human skin cells, and turns these into brown. Color of skin changes according to how much DHA it absorbs. If skin absorbs a little amount of DHA, it turns into golden brown. If it absorbs a lot of DHA, it turns darker, but not necessarily brown.

Preparing for a tan

Self-tanning requires some preparation for getting best results. It is important to exfoliate before one goes for a spray tan. This way, a tan lasts longer. It is crucial not to apply any deodorant, moisturizer, or makeup before spray tan. And an individual should wear loose clothing after a tanning session.

Choosing self-tanning products

Human skins are of varied types. So tanning products have different effects on different skins. It may happen that a product turns a skin into brown, and another into orange. It is recommended for people having olive skin, to choose creams and lotions that provide a deep tan. These creams and lotions contain a lot of DHA. On the other hand, people who are very pale should not pick products that offer a deep tan. It is important for them to make sure that a tanning product will produce a light tan. If a person is already having a product containing too much DHA, he can dilute it by mixing some moisturizing cream. After careful mixing, it should be spread evenly on body.

A tanning enthusiast should consider spending considerable money on a good-quality tanning product. To create quality tanning product, one needs quality ingredients, and these often are costlier. However, it is also true that an expensive tanning product will not necessarily give best results. Moreover, individual skin types are different, so what worked for a person may not work for another. It is a fact that human skin changes noticeably over time, and over different seasons, so tanning requirements also change over time. Finally, with a good-quality tanning product, one does not need to apply a lot. A less amount is sufficient.
