Spray-tanning or sunless tanning refers to applying chemicals on human skin to produce the effect similar in appearance to a conventional suntan. Spray tanning needs some preparation for getting best results.

It is important to exfoliate before going for a spray tan. Spray-tanning solutions affect only the dead skin cells. Human skin has a build up of dead skin cells on top of it. The thicker the layer, the quicker it will rub off. If exfoliation is done, the layer becomes very shallow, and it takes a while for it to build up. And hence, the tan will last longer. It is important not to apply any deodorant, moisturizer, or makeup before spray tan. Many deodorants stop spray-tanning solution going through. Some others may turn one’s armpits green. Many moisturizers and makeup products may act as a barrier, not allowing the full amount of solution to attach itself to skin. Some spray tanning solutions may contain a large amount of Aloe Vera, so a person will be well moisturized after a tan. As soon as tanning session is over, one can apply deodorant and makeup.

It is a good idea to wax or shave legs before spray tanning. But it should be made sure to wash legs after waxing to remove any wax residue. If one shaves his legs after a spray tan, he may lose some of the tan with his hairs. Bronzers are a type of temporary sunless tanning. These come in powders, sprays, gels, lotions, and moisturizers. But if one goes for a bronzer, it is better for him to shave or wax one or two days before spray tan. Bronzer gets into the newly created pores and can give a person a “spotty” look.

A tanning enthusiast should consider spending considerable money on a good-quality tanning product. To create quality tanning product, one needs quality ingredients, and these often are costlier. However, it is also true that an expensive tanning product will not necessarily give best results. Moreover, individual skin types are different, so what worked for a person may not work for another. It is a fact that human skin changes noticeably over time, and over different seasons, so tanning requirements also change over time. Finally, with a good-quality tanning product, one does not need to apply a lot. A less amount is sufficient.
