Acrysof Restor Lens
This technology was in use for the lenses of the telescopes and microscopes. However, recently Alcon made their first use as the intraocular lenses. They contain the feature of apodized diffraction as well as refraction and both of them together provide the ability to view the objects at shorter distances as well as the longer distances.
The patients who undergo the cataract surgery generally do have some problems in viewing the near objects clearly. Therefore, they need to wear glasses after the surgery. The AcrySof(r) ReSTOR(r) IOL, is a technology that will help these people and provide an aid for their vision
Working of the AcrySof(r) ReSTOR(r) IOL
For viewing, the objects at different distances our eyes have to change its focus and this it does by changing the thickness of the eye lens by pressing them or relaxing them. However, the eyes of some people lose this ability. This ability is accommodation. When they lose this ability, they need to use either the reading glasses or the bifocals.
However, these lenses have the characteristic through which it contains both the apodized diffraction and the refractive technologies.
The apodized diffraction:
Diffraction is the phenomenon in which the lenses spread the straight beam of the light that passes through them.
It is a technology in which the lenses in which the diffractive steps have a gradual taperation from the central part to the outer edges. The central part of the lens has an apodized diffractive optic. This enables the lenses to have a smooth transition of the light as per the distance through which they come from. Therefore, the user can view all the objects that range from shorter distances to greater distances.
Refraction
Refraction is the changing the straight path of the light and then focusing it to some other path. These lenses have the similar characteristics through which it focuses the light to fall on the retina. For this, the outer ring of the lens does the work. They focus the light from the distance object and thus enable the eyes to view them clearly.
Uses of these lenses
These lenses aid the people who have problem with the accommodation factor of their eyes. These lenses are generally for implanting in the eyes and therefore once the user implants them he will not have to care for them again. On the other hand, these people need to use the bifocals or the reading glasses for viewing the objects of the shorter or the longer distances accordingly.
